I will be using a quotes from my paper, “Trapped”.
1.
Gregor
is trapped not only by his bug like appearance, but also because his family
shuns him. They hate him and see him as not a family member but rather as a
burden in their lives. “The
apple remained imbedded in his flesh…reminded even his father that Gregor was a
member of the family, in spite of his present pathetic and repulsive shape, who
could not be treated as an enemy…on the contrary, it was the commandment of
family duty to swallow their disgust and endure him, endure him and nothing
more” (Kafka 38). Gregor’s family no longer loves him, and this leaves
him feeling depressed and shunned. Gregor has to deal with these feelings of
shame and has to live his life knowing that he is alone. (I introduced the
quote by explaining the content of the story and the situation at hand.
Everything is introduced by the time the quote starts and when it is done I talk
on how the quote is applicable to the question in the thesis. My writing seems
to be clear and concise on the happening in the story.)
2.
Nora also faces limitations in her
life. She finds limitations with the people that she loves and has come to call
her family. She is in a marriage that is not just to her. She hardly knows her
kids due to the fact that their housemaid spends all of her time raising the
kids. She has no power and is practically a “doll” to her husband, Helmer.
Their marriage is very one-sided, favoring Helmer, as he is not only the
breadwinner but also the one that holds the power in the household. “The lie of
the marriage institution decrees that she shall continue to do so, and the
social conception of duty insists that for the sake of that lie she need be
nothing else than a plaything, a doll, a nonentity” (Goldman packet). Nora is
restricted by her current life due to her relationships and actions within her
family. She also owes a loan to a shark that she took out to help save her
husband. She is too scared to ask her husband to pay it off so she has to make
her own money and save up to pay off the debt to the shark, leaving her
penniless. Her situation leaves her powerless to the world around her. Many
households today are like this. In the Middle East, women are still struggling
for their most basic rights. “In many Middle Eastern countries, for example,
women effectively live as prisoners, unable to leave the house except under the
guardianship of a male guardian (In this paper I also introduced the quote with
facts and background from the story to e the quote up. I talked about it after
as well, analyzing the quote for its worth to the story and how it answered the
question. I also spoke on how the quote led into the progression of the story
and how it progressed the story.)
